I used to be annoyed by the bombardment of television attack ads. Now I'm just mystified. How can it be that we, the public, elect these people to represent us when they have such a hard time communicating in a straight, honest way? Republican or Democrat — it's junk.

From a marketing perspective, this banter is killing the brand, and the brand is the United States Congress. Politicians may claim they're connecting with constituants, but in reality they're driving a wedge deeper and deeper with the American public. Their deceitful advertising and innane campaigns couldn't win a student council election. The more they advertise, the less people care.

How this relates to your business is quite simple. If your message is one of puffery and deception, your brand will suffer because consumers eventually figure it out. What you do is vastly more important to customers than what you say.

SUGGESTION: Examine all the ways you communicate with your customer, and eliminate everything that sounds like a politician. Phrases like, "We're working hard", "We appreciate hearing from you", and "Nobody understands you like we do." Delete them all, and get real.
